Hmm, I thaught I'd just post this screenie because I happen to like it myself, and to bump this thread to see if someone else still plays... And yes, I got bored. My laptop is in coma, and my desktop only has 503Mhz with 128 RAM, so I can't do too much in Mageworld. Finishing my SP game is impossible on this desktop, so I can only play MP solo at the moment, if I avoid the Black homerows. On the bright side, I now can use the +Good / +Evil command with my Demon. Unfortunately, her appearance doesn't change, whilst I destinctly recall having seen Xaa-posted screenshots of altered appearance of the Fox when using the +Good / +Evil command...

Unfortunately, her appearance doesn't change, whilst I destinctly recall having seen Xaa-posted screenshots of altered appearance of the Fox when using the +Good / +Evil command... She was also wearing an item. It was the item that caused the appearance change with +good/+evil. [edit] Nevermind, you already have it, judging by that screenshot. Your problem is you are attempting to use +good/+evil after you enter the world. It can only be used in the starting area. And, once you make a selection, you can't change it later. [/edit]

Did I miss something ? They appear to be very friendly, which I'm not used to. Normally they tend to try to kill me.

Remember that Red characters in Mageworld pick an alignment based on which side they choose to enter on. Enter on a black square, you are evil alignment, and they ignore you. Enter on a white square, you are good alignment, and they attack. Beyond a certain point, however, a red character can use the +good and +evil commands to set their aligmnent before they enter the world - though the commands only work in the start area, you can't change after you enter. It takes a lot of monster whomping before you can get to use those commands, though.

Hmm, I thaught I'd just post this screenie because I happen to like it myself, and to bump this thread to see if someone else still plays... Totally missed this post. Oh well. A little late. Heck ya, man. I still play sometimes. Most of these shots are old, though. Still wish we could get a game going with some of the regulars here. Here's some old screens. I loved the ghosts from Mageworld. This one is the fox. Dig how the ears show up and how the ghost interferes with the tree in the background. Another pic with interesting image interference. I think this behavior has something to do with the way the skinning of the cat (har!) character is done. The tree is in front and blocks out the cat, but the tree's texture also vanishes. A group game we did a looong time ago, just after Mageworld's release (I think this was still v1.1). My level 30 character. Took forever to make her, but managed it (with a method that is no longer possible in v2; sorry Xaa). This shot reminiscent of an LoH shot with a friend involving priests from the King's Castle. Somebody told me that "Xaa never plays with the plebes." I don't know why people get their panties in a knot when it comes to Xaa. He likes to play as much as everyone else. Maybe he just likes playing with people who don't make accusations like that? Anyway, took this shot because he joined a game shortly after that comment had been made. Couldn't help but snap a pick to prove the ignorant commenter wrong. We ran around, killed things, talked, and generally a good time was had by all. Xaa even taught me how to make the invulnerability spell. After I found out I could cast it on my summons, hideous beatings were visited upon my foes. I disavow all knowledge of how those beatings occurred. Have others, but these are probably the highlights. Enjoy.

Enter on a white square, you are good alignment, and they attack. Well, the fox is Red, but the +Good turned her into a White wolf. I joined a Black square and visited the RiddleDungeon to see if I could find a new riddle, and after that I dropped by for a visit with the Reds... Long ago, whenever I felt like killing a King, I joined Black, because the path to the Red King is a lot shorter from there. Still wish we could get a game going with some of the regulars here. Sounds like fun. ;D Unfortunately, it will be at least a month (most likely more) before I have a more or less decent internet connection to be able to play online, and maybe in that time I can get my laptop set up with a new cooling system so I can actually join a game without crashing this old desktop of mine.

Somebody told me that "Xaa never plays with the plebes." You can tell the person who told you that a message from me. Tell them I said "Go to hell." The largest reason I can't play with other people is that I'm on DIALUP. When I join other people's games, after a few minutes, I lag out and get disconnected. That's it. That's the only reason. It's not that I'm anti-social or think of my fans as "plebes." I'm on dialup. Christ on a crutch... Whoever told you that can go f*ck themselves. I care very much for my fans, I answer each and every e-mail, I listen when they talk about what they liked and didn't like in my books... "Plebes." They can kiss my butt. My fans rock, baby, they are NOT "plebes."

Take what I said regarding alignment, reverse it, there you go. Bottom line is that they attack because they have the opposite alighment, they talk when they have the same alignment. The way the talk skrits and the game engine works, I could have made them neutral, but that would have caused a lot of headaches. It dawned on me that it was far easier just to make them good - it gives an easily accessible place for Black to go where they can get into one helluva fight, and helps even out things between where the two colors can go. Actually, I think the coolest effect I managed in the game was with the little rings and triangles under your character. Generally speaking, neutrals are blue, good is green, evil is red. In the original game, the player's ring is green no matter what their alignment. Why? Well, because DS1 was made with a lot of assumptions on the part of the coders and game designers that make for large headaches when modding. In this case, the entire DS1 game engine was built around the assumption that you are playing a good-aligned character, so there is no code that changes the ring color in-game, and no really effective way to add it. You can, however, specify a different color. So, I made the player's ring gold. Now, that's not a big change, until you realize that it's pretty easy for someone playing black to get used to "red means friendly, green means enemy" when their own ring is gold. In essence, since the rings now more correctly show alignment (with gold being "me, whatever my alignment is"), it flows so smoothly the only time you really notice it is when you go back to playing the normal game. Great stuff, I thought.

Tell them I said "Go to hell." Heh. Sorry. Didn't mean to bring up frustrating issues. All I can say is "can't win them all." There will always be people with issues. Therefore, there will always be people with issues that cause them to dislike you (or me, or somebody). You, Xaa, because of your fame (humility aside, you are more well known than most of us, props to ya) are going to catch a bit more fire than most of us from people with issues (including jealousy). I actually don't even remember who said the above (and no, I'm not just backpeddling, I really don't remember). The only reason I remember it at all was because it caused me to take that screenshot. Never did run into the guy again in irc. Oh well. Don't let it get you down. You know you're better than that. So do the rest of us. Can't agree with you on the rings thing, though. While it is cool, I'm rather partial to the revamped combat engine in MW. Combo attacks, training, moves that flow (within the limits of the DS engine). Characters that duck arrows. Arrows that travel like, well..., arrows. You did a hell of a job.

gfb: Yep, Xaa and his wife let me join in a game with them when my Pooka was just a little tyke. Unfortunantly, My dialup connection in combination with his, just couldn't handle it. Xaa is VERY patient, "Here, let me give you something free so that you can curse at me and scream about what a rotten person I am!" The abuse he has put up with would have driven me crazy a LONG time ago. Not that there isn't evidence that it DID drive HIM crazy... gfb: Liantedan: I'm (hopefully) going high speed wireless connection in just a few weeks. Unfortunantly, time is VERY tight for me right now. BUT, this sounds like fun. I MIGHT have more time in a month or two, perhaps we can get a few games of LOH and Mageworld going sometime in the future! Other than that one attempt with the Xaa's, I've never actually DONE a mp game.

I've never actually DONE a mp game. The game actually gets loads more interesting when you have other people to play off of. If we could put together a game I'm definitely down with joining. I've got a mostly reliable high-speed connection my neighbor and I share now. Hopefully I could host, though I'm not certain about that (don't have control of the firewall, the neighbor does). Assuming I'm able, though, I'm certainly willing.
