I've had a mental image of them as humanoid otters.
Probably from Merle 'grinning Otterishly' but my wife has damaged that with a reminder of 'Emmet Otter's Jug band Christmas Special.'
Tell me Xaa, what's your personal vision of them?

I've had a mental image of them as humanoid otters. Probably from Merle 'grinning Otterishly' but my wife has damaged that with a reminder of 'Emmet Otter's Jug band Christmas Special.' Tell me Xaa, what's your personal vision of them? This is the drawing of Merle Mousefinder from the back cover of the hardbound edition of the first book. Byarl Bearkiller, from the back of one of the other books. My own drawing of Merle Mousefinder. My own drawing of Byarl Bearkiller. My own drawing of Ayori Treeclimber. Answer: They look like short, humanoid mustelids. A typical adult is about 35 to 36 inches tall and weighing around 29 to 31 pounds. Females tend towards the lower end of this range, while males tend towards the upper end of this range. Both males and females are slender and (for lack of a better term) otterish in build, but males are noticably more bulky while females have the expected mammalian attributes. In the eyes of a human, they would be remarkably cute looking, and have no scent at all, save during mating season. During mating season, a human would notice they have a faint but identifiable sweetish, "musky" odor somewhat reminiscent of perfume or cologne (depending on gender). The creatures of Oerth have a sense of smell several thousand times better than humans, but even to them the scent of a mustie outside of mating season is unremarkable unless they are very dirty or very close (like within arm's reach). During mating season, the scent of their musk is a somewhat attractive, cloying, 'musky' odor. The peculiarities of their scent is primarily due to natural selection - only those who were incredibly stealthy survived in the Southern Jungles (for more information, read book 4 of the series).

Ah! Great stuff!
Love the pictures, the picture of Byarl matches my mental picture fairly well.
I had asked before finishing book four, and the fact that they don't look like any specific terran mustelid is explained.
