So.... Xaa are you planning to make Candy land or not?Just curious.. Haven't made any decisions at the moment. The largest problem that I have is trying to get people to understand that creating games is a hobby - I write books for a living. See, I deal with a lot of people online who refuse to read anything unless it's free - as though somehow I'm just supposed to have a money-tree in the back yard. There are also a lot of people who are fans of my books who simply will NOT tell anyone about the books they like. Their thought, I guess, is that they'll keep it secret so only they know. And some fans think that I should turn my hobby into my profession, and make games for a living. This despite the fact that I have said literally thousands of times that I don't want to make games for a living. I even turned down a job at Mad Doc to work on DSLOA because I do not want to make games for a living.Food for thought: Go to the main page for this board and check out the number of threads in the "Game Mod" forums against the number of threads in the "book" forums. I mean, people could be literally asking me *anything* about the books, from why a character did something, to hidden background that isn't revealed in the stories. But, instead, the largest number of posts is "What's the answer to _____ riddle in Mageworld?" Basically, I'm having to work and pay the bills. And by "work", that means sitting down and cranking out the books. I don't have TIME for hobbies right now, and haven't for several months. If my fans want me to have time to work on free games, then they need to help me do well enough to where I have the time to make free games again. I need my fans buy my books, and to start talking about my books to people they know and encouraging them to buy my books. Start a grassroots campaign. Seriously. People don't realize just how easy this is to do. Talk to two friends and get them to agree to talk to two friends, etc. Your two friends talk to two friends who talk to two friends and so on and so on... By the end of two months, the whole planet's heard of my books. It's really that simple. But, it takes effort. I'm doing everything I can from my end, but I need my fans to do what they can from their end. If you like my books, get other people to read them and buy them. Talk to two friends, and get them to talk to two friends, etc. But, to answer your question: I haven't decided what I want to do next when I finally manage to squeak some free hobby time. Doing those 3D models of swords was a couple hours of work, and that's all the hobby time I've had free for months. As it stands, I literally can't afford to do anything for free.

A fairly simple concept. If you enjoyed one of Xaa's games, why not buy a book? You probably spent more time playing LOH and Mageworld than Ehb or UP, but you spent $20 to $40 bucks for Dungeon Siege, and Xaa's games came free. If you enjoyed Xaa's games, why not funnel a little money back to the author by purchasing one of his books? You can download Xaa's books for less than five bucks from www.diskuspublishing.com/jimfarris.html. Wasn't LOH worth as much as a Big Mac and fries? People are paying five smackaroos to buy PC Gamer just so they can get the DS2 demo on CD. Just for the DEMO!!! But you spent how many hours in Mageworld for free? OR, you can buy real dead tree versions of Xaa's books at www.cafepress.com/diskusbooks/413273 for $13 to $25 dollars. You've spent more than that taking the family out to watch BAD movies. If you figure 50 to 60 hours for a complete LOH SP game, that's less than 50 cents an hour, for ONE time through, SP only. And when you count the amount of time spent to get all the way through Mageworld, we are down to pennies. There is no way to lose. You already played the game and enjoyed it, so you KNOW you got your moneys worth. If you never read the book, or hate it, you aren't OUT anything, you just sent a bit of money to they guy who created a game you had fun playing. BUT, if you ENJOY the books, then what an incredible deal! You got the game AND an incredible story for the same price. Heck, perhaps you'll even decide to get ANOTHER book...

While on the topic of telling others about Xaa's books AND purchasing them. I just wanted to pass on that I have had INCREDIBLE customer service from Xaa's publisher, Diskus. I once had a hard-drive crash shortly after purchasing a book from them. The book had NOT made it onto my backups yet. With all the trouble of getting my hard drive replaced and other things going on in my life, I didn't realize that I had "lost" the books until several months after the purchase. I wrote to Diskus and was sent a new copy immediately. That was certainly not something they would have been required to do, but it made me a very happy customer. Just recently I had an issue with the credit card company that Diskus was using. Diskus went WAY out of their way to address the issue and make certain it was corrected, QUICKLY, even though the problem was NOT their's but the vendor's. Most companies wouldn't have given me the time of day, Diskus went the extra mile to make certain I was happy. (Xaa stepped in to help as well!) It's rare to find a company that really offers good customer service today. I would encourage EVERYONE to do business with Diskus. They are good folks and you WILL be taken care of there. So, why not buy one of Xaa's books at Diskus today!, AND tell a friend about them.
