Lockpicking gives you access to some areas late in the game.
If you want to be able to craft everything except cooked food, don't learn Bind Wounds or Meditation. Meditation is nice to have, but you will need to sacrifice either a crafting skill or lockpicking.
Cooking is a fun skill but hasn't got much practical use, so skip that one unless you really want it.
I don't remember any character in the game explaining this recipe, but maybe I missed something.
The hint from Liantedan was for the hold creature spell, not for the recipe you want.

My comment about heavier was in reference to a hint for the Hold Creature Spell. I guess I should have quoted that question to avoid confusion, sorry. So as to the looking-older dilemma, forget that comment of mine. Also, if the Queen's Castle is as far as you've come in Mw, you shouldn't be breaking your head over Looking Older yet. When you run across other things later and figure it out, you can always come back.
