I did some tests with the witch-only bolt spells..
Earth, water and air witches start with essentially the same bolt spell, except that it has different names for them.
This spell has exactly the same range and mechanism (direct hit) as zap. The "listed damage" on spells is notoriously unreliable, so I tested by fighting some typical low level monsters (wolf, bear, goblin).
All the tests, done at level range 1 - 30, yielded the same result.
* The real damage / cast of a witch zap is about twice that of zap. * Zap takes half as much time to cast (zap takes 1 sec, witch zap 2 sec). * Witch zap is about three times as expensive to cast, both in terms of health and in terms of mana.
So, witch zap does almost exactly the same thing as zap, but is more expensive.. I don't see why one would ever use this spell, to be honest. Maybe I'm missing something? Was the Witch Zap intended to be cast at the same speed as zap, maybe?
The special fire witch spell totally rocks, to be sure. Early game with a fire witch is a blast, literally.
