I am hunting for the Dwarfs first weapon (hammer). I left T and my undead mule back in Hamlin so I wouldn’t have to fight all the dwarfs (and I assumed this was a solo mission just like T’s solo mission in the Dark Elves city.) I talked to a dwarf merchant’s wife who said the hammer was taken by Darklings and to search in the south caves. Battled down to (I think the bottom of the cave) and met the Troll King. He is beating the tar and nicotine out of me and I cannot even damage him (He regenerates instantly back to 100 percent after each hit I inflict).
Am I in the right caves for the Dwarf hammer (there are no Darklings?) but compass read south at the entrance? There is another mineshaft cave on the west side of town and the darkling caves I came through to reach the Dwarf city from Hamlin. Did I take a wrong turn at Albuquerque? Do I have to defeat the Troll King to get the hammer? Do I need the hammer first to defeat the Troll King? Is the Troll King for a later quest and is it impossible to defeat him at this time?

You are in the wrong cave. Go back to the Dwarves and when you're standing back at the blacksmith, you're very close to the southern exit of their city.
Ah, yes. If you met darklings, that's their lair. You need the quest before you can find the hammer. Keep in mind it is inside a chest, and the chest is very hard to spot due to the low light in the caves.
The Troll King has nothing to do with the Hammer of Thunder. I have defeated the Troll King without the Hammer, but that will have been at higher level. I have not found any quest related to the Troll King (that I can remember) so killing him should have no complications to your game.
However, by showing yourself in the Goblin Caves and killing them, they will now be hostile to T'Vril too. From now on she can not visit their special shop for special things.

Thanks for information I went back a couple of saves (so the goblins won't be hostile to T'Vril - many thanks for that tip) and headed in the right direction! Located the hammer and found my way back out.

I once annoyed the dwarves on my way OUT. I didn't notice it until levels and levels later. It was quite frustrating having to complete the game without being able to purchase any of the dwarves goodies! So, remember, if you sneak T'Vrill through some place, come back AFTER you have her ALL THE WAY OUT and talk to the folks to make certain they didn't notice her well defined behind on the way out. Ain't LOH fun though! You CARE about what happens so much more than you do in plain old DS.
