(Xaa, please feel free to move this to the proper board, if you wish, once the new "upgrade" issues get all ironed out)
Greetings and Salutations!
I'm looking for a few brave beta testers.
I've written a new version of Mageworld Journal with the following
new features:
WHATS NEW IN VERSION 0.97b Beta?
1:Mageworld Journal can now Install Mageworld for you
To test this function, start Mageworld Journal, click on the MAGEWORLD
menu option, and select "Install Mageworld". You must, of course,
have the zip files for Mageworld 1.0 (and preferably 1.1 and 2.0 as
well.)
2:Mageworld Journal can run Mageworld for you now. Just click the
MAGEWORLD menu option, and select "RUN MAGEWORLD"
3:Mageworld Journal can automatically start Mageworld for you every time
you start Mageworld Journal. Just click the OPTIONS menu, then
START MAGEWORLD WITH MAGEWORLDJOURNAL. (Thanks to Shocked for the
suggestion to not start Mageworld until after MwJ has loaded your
character so as to put less strain on the processor!)
4:You can specify extra runtime parameters for Mageworld by using
OPTIONS/SET EXTRA MAGEWORLD RUNTIME PARMS
(I use this to force 1024/768 mode) If you specify these extra parms
before using the INSTALL MAGEWORLD option, it will put the extra parms
into the mageworld shortcut it creates.
5:Quicknotes. You will notice a new field called "Quick Notes" in the
map panel. Enter a short note in there, and that square will get a
red outline. Hovering your mouse over any square with a red outline
will cause the note to pop-up like a tool tip. (Thanks to Duo for
the suggestion that led to this idea!)
6:The Mageworld 2.0 readme will be appended in the readme tab if it is
available, and is indexed.
7:The help files have been updated.
8:Set Default Character to load on Startup.
Under OPTIONS you will now find a SET DEFAULT CHARACTER TO LOAD ON STARTUP
option. Use this to set which character Mageworld Journal will load when
it starts. Note that if you specify the starting character as a command
line parameter, the character specified on the command line will be loaded
since it overrides the character specified within Mageworld Journals ini
file.
Everything seems to be working fine, but I'd like to have a bit more
testing done on the new "Install Mageworld" feature before I release
this to the general public.
Here is how the install works. You tell MwJ where you have unzipped
all of the mageworld files. MwJ determines the location of your
"Program Files" DS directory, creates a Mageworld directory under
it (if it doesn't already exists) and then copies all of the files
from the above specified "unzip" folder into the "program files"
mageworld folder.
MwJ next determines the location of the "My Documents" Dungeon Siege
folder. It creates a Mageworld folder and the Save folder underneath
it (if they don't already exist). It copies your dungeonsiege.ini,
prefs.gas, and /keys folder from the "My Documents" Dungeon Siege
folder into the "My Documents" Mageworld folder. But ONLY if they
did not already exist, it will NOT overwrite them.
Once that is done, MwJ creates the correct shortcut to Mageworld on
your desktop.
I have tested this on Windows XP, and it seems to be working fine.
As a matter of fact, since it doesn't overwrite anything in the
"My Documents" folder, I'm not certain how it could mess anything
up. BUT, it is a BETA, and should really be checked out by a few
more people before it is released. I would ESPECIALLY appreciate
it if anyone has a windows 95, 98, NT or 2000 system they are
running DS on and could test the new install feature under those
versions for me.
WARNING!!!! Even though I think this is working fine, please back up
your mageworld files before trying this. I would hate to have anyone
lose their save games or screenshots testing the beta. If you are
NOT comfortable with this, do NOT TRY IT. wait until the completely
tested version comes out!!!!
OK, IF after all that you are interested in helping me beta test this
baby, please send me an email (y66jl6502@sneakemail.com) or PM and I'll
send you a link where you can download the Beta.
Again, thank you VERY much.
