So the other day I tried installing LoH on my new laptop which has Vista on it.
At first I just installed the original DS and LoH, without getting patch 1.11. When starting up the game and loading my old characters, things were acting odd. However, I was at least able to set up the game correctly.
Then upon updating the patch to 1.11, I ran into an even bigger problem.
Windows tells me "This program has known compatibility issues. Check online to see if solutions are available etc etc" - this window never came up before I downloaded the newest patch.
I go to the 'run anyways' option, when the following window appears:
Dungeon siege critical error: Unable to access or create a critical path that is required to operate. Internal info:
path var: 'H' value: " ('Hyperborea') error: 'H' (0x028E02A6)
When I click ok (only option) to continue, the game then loads the original DS, and not LoH.
This has led me to believe that there is soemthign wrong with the shortcut, however the shortcut was working fine before I got the patch and the compatibility warning.
Any help on resolving this issue would be much appreciated.

Can you check your installation directory of Dungeon Siege ( default C:/Program Files/Microsoft Games/Dungeon Siege ) if the folder named "Hyperborea" is still there ? This error you get sounds like the patch either destroyed the Hyperborea folder, or the files in it.

The folder is still there as is everything in it.

Weird.
Have you tried uninstalling LoH completely, then running regular DS, and thereafter installing LoH again ?

That's very odd indeed. I'm afraid my knowledge of Vista is ( intentionally ) limited, so I don't have much of an idea what to do next. ( Except for uninstalling DS and LoH entirely, installing DS, updating it, installing LoH and trying that; or downgrading back to XP, which actually has become a pretty good OS these days. )
Maybe someone else will have better advise for you, sorry.

DS is normally set up correctly for Vista, with any updatable files going under My Documents, where you have write access, but you can override things with the shortcut and break that. make sure your user_paths is somewhere you can write to.

Ok, well I took another shot at it, uninstalled absolutely everything, reinstalled it, re-unzipped loh, set up the paths and everything, and this time things seem to be working fne ;D
Still don't get what I had wrong originally, but things are running along fine now.
